WHERE WE ARE

{phocamaps view=map|id=1}

COMING FROM ROME, OR PIENZA AND MONTALCINO:
When you arrive at the intersection at the base of the Montepulciano hill, if you're coming from Rome turn right, if you're coming from Pienza go straight through - direction Montepulciano.
Immediately you come to a fork in the road - take the left fork and follow the signs to Centro Storico, Duomo, Museo, and Parcheggio N. 8.
Take the first left - a sharp left - onto Via dei Filosofi, and follow the steep, panoramic road up the hill.
After a right curve you will pass the entrance to Parking Lot No. 8. Keep going, and at the top of the hill, take a sharp right. After a few metres, you will come to the Cantina on your right, in Via di Colazzi 72, under the Church of Santa Maria dei Servi.
The Winery's parking lot is just before the entrance to the Cantina and is available for your use. If the parking lot is full, turn around and go back down Via dei Filosofi where you will find free parking. Otherwise, you can continue up towards the Piazza Grande, where there is metred parking.

COMING FROM FLORENCE OR SIENA
You will come into Montepulciano on a long straight road at the end of which is a roundabout with traffic lights. Turn left at the roundabout and skirt the outside of the town, with the public gardens and then the town wall on your right, in the direction of Pienza, Chianciano and the A1 motorway to Rome.
Stay on the inner ring road to the right, following the signs to Centro Storico, Duomo, and Parcheggio N. 8.
The road descends for a little way and you come to a fork; take the right fork and follow the steep, panoramic Via dei Filosofi up the hill.
After a right curve you will pass the entrance to Parking Lot No. 8. Keep going, and at the top of the hill, take a sharp right. After a few metres, you will come to the Cantina on your right in Via Collazzi 72, under the Church of Santa Maria dei Servi.
The Winery's parking lot is just before the entrance to the Cantina, and is available for your use. If the parking lot is full, turn around and go back down Via dei Filosofi where you will find free parking. Otherwise, you can continue up towards the Piazza Grande, where there is metred parking.

FOR GPS - ENTER VIA DEI FILOSOFI, AND AT THE TOP OF THE HILL, TURN RIGHT.

THE WINERY

The core of the winery is located in the southern part of Montepulciano, in the area of Argiano, while other, traditional vineyards are located in Caggiole and Ascianello. The composition of the soils, favourable exposure, and a special microclimate, make these lands particularly suitable for wine production.

Vinification takes place in the modern facility at Podere Banditella, which is almost entirely run on renewable energy. Vino Nobile and other high-end wines are refined in the historic cantinas of Montepulciano.

THE FAMILY

famiglia-gattavecchi2

The Gattavecchi family has dedicated itself to wine production for over a hundred years.
Each generation has made its contribution to Montepulciano’s wine history in a spirit of innovation and respect for tradition and the land.
By the 1950’s, Valente Gattavecchi was already going beyond the borders of Italy to introduce the best selection of Vino Nobile – refined in the ancient convent of Santa Maria dei Servi in Montepulciano.

Today brothers Luca and Gionata, their sister Daniela, and their mother Gianna, are personally involved not only in every phase of production and all aspects of running the winery, but also in welcoming friends and wine lovers from all parts of the world to the historic Cantina in Montepulciano.

Traditions And Terroir

vigneti-gattavecchi big2

Producing wine in Montepulciano is not like producing wine just anywhere. Here, history, art and culture profoundly influence every moment of our work, and every sip of our wine recalls the values that have made this region famous over the centuries. Our family has cultivated these values for generations – tending to every vine so that each bunch of grapes matures perfectly, listening to each litre of wine as it rests in the deep silence of our historic cellars, and uncorking a new vintage in the company of friends from all parts of the world. But those values we hold most dear find their expression in our respect for the land and the environment, without which we could not accomplish our work.

We protect our values with the steadfastness of those who cannot be swayed by the latest fad, for we are convinced that even the greatest tradition can be improved upon every day, through thinking with love and working with passion.

THE HISTORIC CELLAR

cantina storica

Gattavecchi is an historical name in Montepulciano, the name of a family that for four generations has dedicated itself to the production of wine. In 1944 tragic bombing devastated the winemaking business of grandfather Vincenzo. Valente Gattavecchi, with the help of his mother Sidonia, rebuilt the business in the vinery and cellars of Simoneschi-Baroncelli, which had previously belonged to the 12th century convent of The Padri Serviti.
The Vino Nobile Gattavecchi was finally able to safely lie in an ideal, if not unique, place in which to mature.

Selected grapes from the poderi (estate farmhouses) in Argiano, Cervognano and Le Caggiole, three of the best zones for growing Prugnolo Gentile, are brought in for the making of a Vino Nobile of great standing.
In the underground grottos and caves and in the adjacent vaults of the church of Santa Maria dei Servi the wines rest for more than two years before reaching markets all over the world.
